The Ship Inn Restaurant & Hotel, Mundesley

When I moved away from Norfolk I always knew I’d be back. Living up north was great for the social scene and living in Bedford made traveling to London, and actually most parts of the country really easy. Norfolk may be quite difficult to get out of at times but to be fair you need a pretty good reason to leave as I think it has it all.

Never Far From the Coast

One of its biggest charms is the North Norfolk coast. Mundesley is one of my favourite destinations as it has a beautiful sandy beach and a rather fantastic pub right on the cliff called The Ship Inn! The pub is now run by local boy Nick Honey who rarely has a day off ensuring that everything is Ship-Shape (excuse the pun 😬). The Ship Inn boasts a seafront location and large beer garden. It’s also dog friendly, so after a nice long walk on the beach you can cosy up by the log fire in the bar area with your four legged friend 😘🐶

There is as wide variety of beverages, wines, spirits, ales and an abundance of gin – they are currently creating their very own special Ship Inn Gin which I’m really looking forward to getting my laughing gear around but in the mean time I’m happy to make do with one of Nick’s special cocktails made with prosecco, elder-flower, gin and lots of lovely fruit!

The restaurant is beautifully designed and has a sophisticated nautical feel. I love the large fabric chairs which feel very grand.
Then there’s the view – The Ship Inn overlooks the beach and seafront that gives you the most amazing panoramic views. Dusk is a particularly lovely time as there’s often an amazing pink hue across the skyline.

Food Glorious Food

I would describe the menu as seasonal pub classics done to perfection with some great fishy specials and grills. I had the chowder on Sunday and it was probably the best chowder I’ve ever had. It wasn’t watery at all but thick and creamy and oohhhh so fishy… nom nom! If your not into your fish the roasts are massive and amazing, beautifully tender beef and locally sourced seasonal veg. Lucy is not a veggie lover at all but couldn’t get enough of the cauliflower cheese!

There are also burgers fit for a king. Ashley is a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to burgers and said it was a very substantial meaty (I like that word let’s say it again MEATY) pattie, full of the good stuff and perfectly seasoned. All of the meals were well presented but not too fussy, which I’m a big fan of, I get frustrated when I have to work to get my food in my face. The kids’ meal was just as good as ours, basically a mini version and well priced. My only note would be don’t be afraid to ask for a toy or some colouring bits to keep your little ones entertained as these are not out on display… However, the attentive staff soon stepped in with paper and pencils just at the right time.

Friendly Staff & Service

The service is warm, friendly and professional. Communication between the team is brilliant! I witnessed several conversations regarding bookings who were about to enter or had special requirements so that the service could be tailored to their needs. Our waitress asked if we would like the kids meals at the same time as the starters (which you know if you have kids is a must) and was always on hand but not intrusive. Manager Nick is a character and so funny, he loves what he does and will ensure that you have the best time!
