After meeting Alex on the @broadtours boat and sampling some, (OK a lot) of their scrummy little canapés I had to take a visit to the Garden Kitchen Cafe in Wroxham. It’s only 15 minutes down the road and right near Wroxham Barns, so for Wilba it was a win-win!
Location
The Garden Kitchen Café is nestled in the grounds of Hoveton Hall, but you don’t have to be visiting the hall to enjoy their culinary delights. It does however make the perfect stop before or after a stroll around the gardens.
Set in the beautiful outbuildings of the hall, the Garden Kitchen Café is well heated and decorated with pot plants and comfy rustic furnishings. Wilba loved playing on the patchwork blanket and having her babyccino from a proper old fashioned tea cup.
Summer brunch here is a must as the courtyard is full of tables, and if you’re bringing the little ones they can play in the paddock opposite. If it does turn a bit chilly the back barn has fairy lights and plenty of seating. Wilba made us sit in the hay store at the top which has a large chalkboard, toys and books to keep tiny-tots entertained. The Garden Kitchen Café is also dog friendly which is great. Although it’s worth mentioning that the Hoveton Hall Gardens are not.
Food & Drink
Now let’s get on to the main event – the food. I’m not overly adventurous with my food choices, meat and two veg, pasta or a burger usually suffice, so when I saw Huevos Rancheros and Shakshuka on the menu I was worried it may be too exotic. Not to mention I had no idea what the heck it was, so I plumped for the Full English, as you do! My friend was more refined than me and went for it. Turns out it was an egg dish and I must admit I was very envious. It looked amazing and I can confirm it tasted that way too (thanks Tracey).
My full English was amazing too. Everything was made then and there on-site using fresh quality ingredients locally sourced. The flavours were just perfect together and you couldn’t fault a thing.
Real Hearty, Happy Food
I didn’t stay for cake that day but I did return on Tuesday and had walnut and banana cake… I hope you all appreciate the lengths I go to bring you the facts! What can I say, it was heavenly and a great sized portion too.
Prices are competitive but you are getting great quality food, good portion sizes and first class service in a tremendous setting so I actually think they have got it about right.
The Staff
Everyone that works at the Kitchen Garden Café is amazing, cheerful and very helpful. If you have any allergens or dietary requirements you just have to ask and they’ll whip you up something amazing. At one point Wilba was taken off to help one of the waitresses when she could see Wilba was a bit bored of mummy’s endless chatting and came back smiling from ear to ear with her new waitress role. She like her so much she wanted her to come with us when she left!
I can honestly say I will come back here time and time again. The location, the atmosphere, the food and the people are all wonderful. I’ve also now found out they have live music on Friday nights too.
Please do pop this on your ‘places to visit’ list. You won’t be disappointed and if you book you can get a complimentary starter or desert with your meal! Don’t forget to tell them Cookie sent you and they might tell you about their Friday dance 😘
